Tatarai Trust

The Tatarai community is in Romania and is home to 50 people ranging in age from 18 to 45. They are normal people who just happen to be either orphaned, physically or mentally handicapped to some degree - or a combination of these. Each individual has likes, dislikes, virtues and faults - just like everybody.

What they have in common is that Tatarai is the only happy home they have ever known. Some of them came here as orphaned or abandoned babies; others arrived much later from disturbed and abusive childhoods. But at Tatarai they have found security, safety and a big inclusive family. Without this place to be they would be alone and unsupported.

The Tatarai Trust exists to support them. The animals on the farm, the extras like TVs, music, toiletries, good clothes and treats come through the money the Trust supplies; and it makes possible an educational programme that gives residents - and staff - the opportunity to develop their skills and achieve recognition for their efforts. Trustees have been connected with Tatarai since 1991; the good connections built up over years with the Romanian authorities have in the past safeguarded the Tatarai community's existence and now promise a guarantee of a long term future. The Trust has signed a Convention with these authorities, based in regional capital Ploiesti, committing us to supporting the community and residents for as long as they need us.
